The eyes of a dog, the expression of a dog, the warmly wagging tail of a dog and the gloriously cold damp nose of a dog were in my opinion all God-given for one purpose only - to make complete fools of us human beings. Barbara Woodhouse No Bad dogs (1982)
This is Newt pictured with our Sheltie, Skyler, at 10 months of age. Newt turned out to be a wonderful surrogate daddy for the puppy.
When I started creating this particular page I wasn't sure how to express what owning Newt means to me. I guess by now it's obvious that Newt is very special to me. I read once that our pets are gifts from God. I for one, believe that to be true. Newt is a constant reminder to me of how carefully God created and chose this Border Collie to be my companion.

A special way to bless your favorite pet is to say a little prayer for them, maybe before going off to work. The prayer is simply this, "May the Lord bless you and keep you." Try it out for your own pet. I am sure if you have taken the time to read this and own a special pet too, then you understand what I mean.

I didn't initially start out in life wanting a Border Collie. My first love centered around German Shepherds. I  have always loved their noble look, yet comical demeanor. However, owning a GSD has not happened. Now I feel perfectly content with Newt, Kelley and Skyler, my new Sheltie. Border Collie's and Shelties have an appeal all their own.

Border Collies (in particular) are known for being just a tad quirky, and concerning a sense of humor, they have no peer. These comments are not meant to discredit any other breed of dog...their just my opinion. They are extremely affectionate animals. Newt especially loves kisses and hugs from his loved ones. Border Collies enjoy their owner's company as long as they are treated with love and respect.

That means a Border Collie is a wonderful barometer of how well or how badly ones relationship with them may be going. I hope that sounds right?! The gist of it is this...a BC that does not enjoy a close, loving relationship with it's owner will openly act fearful or else ignore that person totally. Border Collies are very honest dogs, especially with their feelings.

The unconditional love that a Border Collie can give to its owner is priceless. Newt always greets me when I return from town . He makes a big deal out of my homecoming. Wagging his entire body, dancing around, jumping and licking my face. There is no doubt we have a good relationship.

Because of our mutual respect, Newt is a very willing and responsive dog when we are training in obedience or agility. Border Collies learn very quickly. Training methods must be fun, exuberant and cheerful. Should I lose my patience when training him (yes, it happens sometimes...I'm human), Newt decides not to do anything. Training is over as far as he is concerned. Border Collies will not put up with nonsense! I like this trait. It reminds me to keep training sessions fun and short...with lots of playtime thrown in for free.

Another wonderful trait of the Border Collie is loyalty. Newt is prone to not obeying anyone else, but me or his Gam'ma. Once when learning a new herding command the trainer stepped into the arena in order to "make" Newt mind. What happened? Newt decided he had no reason to obey this "intruder", and simply walked over behind me to peep out at the situation. The Trainer took the hint and left. Later on, Newt and I accomplished the task ourselves.

Well, I have rambled on way too long. I hope though, that you have gained an understanding of "how" a Border Collie becomes "more" than just a dog or pet. Their goal in life is to do the best at whatever "job" put before them. They strive to please and love their owners. They reform your thinking about how to train them. They make life fun...everyday you own them. In other words for me, Newt makes every bad day good. I believe, Newt is definitely a "gift" from God. "Every good and perfect gift comes from above...James 1:17".
