Translate Newt's Page
Why you may ask? One reason is, that when in public Newt can act very protective. We have a sign in the car window on his side that warns folks that he is on patrol. Newt feels that "his" car and "his" people should be kept safe. However, at home we are talking about a very different Newt. He loves to get tummy rubs, back scratches and ear rubs. He doesn't hesitate to ask for petting. Newt will even jump in your lap (if you're ignoring him) or paw your leg for attention. He enjoys being as close to his people as possible which is a hallmark of most Border Collies.
Now he still needs exercise and can be a real pest when I haven't fulfilled his daily quota. I like to run him until he quits on his own. Then I "know" he is truly tired. What I mean by "running" is one of two activities. When I use go into town and run about a mile myself, Newt went along too. Or they also (Newt & Kelley) enjoyed a vigorous game of Frisbee if I chose to stay home for the evening! Of course, now that we have Skyler, our "BC wanna-be Sheltie" everyone is exercising more to tucker then little guy out for the day. Regardless if this breed's need for daily activity, it's good to know that even an energetic breed can still conform to it's owner's lifestyle. There are days when I cannot give him the needed exercise and he seems to understand. Those are the times when I see him as my true companion, capable of denying himself to simply spent his day with me. Newt's Stats Border Collies come in many sizes. Newt is 24" at the shoulder, a bit on the larger end of the size spectrum. Most of them top out at 20 " for females and 22" for males. One reason for Newt's taller height might be attributed to when he was neutered. Any dog, males or female, that is neutered/spayed respectively before the age of 7 months will generally continue to grow beyond the normal range for their breed. |
