You ask of my companions. Hills, sir, and the sundown, and a dog as large as myself which my father bought me. They are better than human beings, because they know but do not tell. Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

Newt has several very special friends here at home. There is Piper, our first Sheltie, who helped to raise him. Next, came Kelley, our second Border Collie, whom Newt helped to raise.

Finally, we brought Skyler home allegedly for Piper, but our second little Sheltie baby has been taken over by the Border Collies. Skyler, is their surrogate child. They enjoy many hours of playing with him, being chased by him and rolling him over in mock battles. Skyler is a wonderful source of new toys and momentarily forgotten puppyfood.

Newt's blended family!
Newt has one other friend here at home too. He is our rescued Rough Collie/Border Collie cross, Glenn. These two share more of a rivalry than a friendship. Newt doesn't like Kelley near Glenn and she just loves him. Skyler enjoys playing with Uncle Glenn, but Newt isn't sure this is such a good idea either. However, when I take them out for a hike in the woods all differences are forgotten and everyone gets along.

Piper use to love chasing Newtaround the backyard every morning before the effects of arthritis and age took over. He still tries to chase him, but more often barks his commands in place instead of in chase. Hee...Hee. Piper will also join in a game of tug with either Newt or Kelley, but finds those darn Border Collies try to perform dental surgery on him when yanking the toy back. I believe the 'ole Sheltie has become content to supervise all the other dog's activities rather than get tussled about in their games.

I hope to soon add a separate about each of them. Stay tuned.

Kelley and Newt (both speutered), are best friends. He adores her to the point of not wanting other dogs near her though. Obviously, Newt is the jealous type. He likes to be where she is for fear Kelley will have might more fun without him. Newt should be the center of her attention anyway. They lay face to face on the floor and chew each others ears, faces, necks and paws. You should see their wet, disheveled fur after such mock fusses.

I know these two are quite happy with their own company and seem to miss the other one when separate. Newt can't stand it when I'm working Kelley and he can't watch. Kelley gets down right mad when I'm working Newt and she can't switch places. When I'm working Kelley in heeling Newt will join in right beside her, sitting at heel when she stops. I've wondered if they might make a good brace in obedience. It sure would be fun to see  Newt and Kelley working together as a team.

Kelley and Newt posing together in the woods near out home. We go for walks along this area quite often. The dogs love it and the exercise helps to keep me in shape.

Newt has a cat friend named "Stubbins" because his tail is missing. Well, it's not really missing just very, very short. See Stubbins is a Manx. He was given to be when I worked for a Vet near our home. The people who owned him previously weren't taking very good care of him so Stubbins was hijacked and given to me. I had him neutered and he now lives peacefully with all of his canine friends.
